Hypnosis is an increasingly popular and medically accepted form of complementary therapy. Medical students at Cambridge University and other medical training centres now receive training in hypnosis as part of their studies.

How does it work?

You may not be aware that the root causes of most issues reside in the subconscious mind – the part that controls both good and bad behaviours and habits, as well as moods, addictions and phobias. My unique programme of hypnotherapy, NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Therapy) effectively and rapidly helps your subconscious mind re-assess long-standing values and perceptions. It safely allows healthy and positive change to take place at a comfortable pace for you.

Hypnosis & Smoking

Hypnotherapy is, as the name suggests, hypnosis for therapy. One of the most common uses for hypnotherapy is to help people to stop smoking. John Keith & Peter Farnsworth are the clinical hypnotherapists based at Total Health.

Recognised as an advanced practitioners in smoking cessation by the Central Register for Stop Smoking Therapists (CRSST), they have the knowledge and skills to help those clients that genuinely want to stop smoking.

The session lasts for approximately ninety minutes and starts by examining why the client smokes, why they have chosen this particular time to stop, and their smoking ‘habits’. They will also explain what it will feel like when the client is ‘in hypnosis’ and hopefully dispels many of the myths that surround hypnosis, most of which are untrue.

Unlike stage hypnotism, hypnotherapy tends to use a slower, less dramatic hypnotic induction which helps the client to become completely relaxed and comfortable with the therapy. As with all hypnosis, it is not mind-control and the process relies on the client being willing to use their imagination, and to ‘follow’ the hypnotherapist as he describes various images and scenarios.

The reason that hypnotherapy is so successful in helping people to stop smoking, particularly compared to other methods such as gums, patches, etc. is that the ‘desire’ to smoke comes from the sub-conscious mind. In day-to-day life, we use our conscious, logical minds to make decisions and communicate, but our emotions, fears and desires are stored in our sub-conscious, illogical minds.

Unfortunately, the conscious mind is ‘normally’ unable to communicate with the sub-conscious. Think of them as separate, foreign countries where neither one speaks the other persons language. The hypnotherapist is like an interpreter who can make the sub-conscious understand what it is that the conscious mind wants it to do, namely Stop Smoking!

Your conscious, logical mind already knows that smoking is harmful, anti-social and expensive and people still smoke. Once the sub-conscious is given this ‘new information’, the desire to smoke is removed.

That just leaves the ‘habitual’ side to deal with. Whenever you do something for a long time, it becomes a habit, an action or series of actions that are carried out ‘without conscious thought’. Again, hypnotherapy can help to change the habit but John & Peter do more than that.

By the use of certain techniques from NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), the client is taught how to make adjustments to their routines that will assist in breaking the old habits.

In the majority of cases, 9 out of 10 clients find that a single, ninety minute session is all that is needed to help them to finally quit, but it is recommended that a follow-up session is done within a week, to reinforce the change.

Hypnotherapy: Some Myths Explained

You don’t go to sleep.
You are not unconscious.
You do hear what is said.
You are free to open your eyes at any time.

Other myths include:

“The hypnotherapist can control you” – your normal freewill and moral standards apply during hypnosis. You cannot do anything that is against your beliefs and you are never out of control.

“You can get stuck in hypnosis” – you can easily return to a normal alert state at any point. You experience a deeply relaxed state whilst remaining fully aware at all times.

“A hypnotist can put you in a trance without your consent” – Hypnotherapy is a partnership of trust between the client and the therapist. You need a good relationship or rapport to feel comfortable enough to go into a hypnotic state.

“I can’t be hypnotised” – You go in and out of hypnotic states during everyday life, such as daydreaming, getting absorbed in a good book, watching television or films and even driving. If you’ve ever bought a product because of the advertising you may well have been influenced at a hypnotic level.

After meeting your therapist you will be taken through a detailed consultation about your presenting complaint, recent and past medical history and general lifestyle questions. A physical examination of the face, tongue, hair, eyes etc is often useful to indicate your overall wellbeing.

Your therapist will then develop a treatment program tailored to your specific condition and will go through this with you. The first consultation is often a little longer than any follow up appointments that you may require. Expect your initial treatment to be approx 90 minutes, with follow up appointments around 60 mins.
